ActionAid Ireland Graduation Ceremony for participants of the AFTER Project Empowerment Paths Programme. The event took place on 9th February 2018 at Nano Nagle Place, Douglas Street, Cork. Around 80 graduates from three direct provision centres in Co. Cork who completed a 12 week programme to develop their understanding and awareness of FGM and the need to reject this harmful practice. On the day we will have interviews available with visiting three visiting Guests from Liberia who can discuss the fight for FGM in Liberia; with Dr Caroline Munyi, who has been coordinating the project in Cork. I can also arrange interviews with some participants who will be graduating from the programme. The Graduation Ceremony is the exciting culmination of ActionAid’s AFTER (Against Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting Through Empowerment and Rejection) project, an EU-funded programme which seeks to eliminate the practice of FGM/C among migrant communities in Ireland. We have been carrying out community-based work in Cork in the direct provision centres, using the successful approaches used by ActionAid in Africa to help communities abandon or reject harmful cultural practices such as FGM/C and child marriage.
