The record was set at Waterford Airport back in 2009 when 24 eye-catching hot air balloons took to the skies above the airport and booked their place in history as the largest ever number of hot air balloons taking off in-line at an airport in Ireland and in the UK. This week there are over 30 balloons taking part in the attempt. Commenting on the record attempt, event organiser and balloonist Joe Daly said, “We are delighted to take part in this in-line launch at Waterford Airport, there are over 30 balloons visiting this festival, so should we be successful at Waterford Airport on Monday in setting this record it will be a tough one to beat.” Desmond O’Flynn, CEO at Waterford Airport said they looking forward to playing their part. “It is great to be involved to and provide Air Traffic Control assistance to the balloon crews for the duration of the festival and for the record attempt. We wish the Irish Hot Air Ballooning Championship crew every success in the city this week.” The Irish National Hot Air Ballooning Championships are the longest running such event in the world and balloons from throughout Ireland, the UK, France, Holland, Italy and USA will travel to take part in the visually spectacular aviation event. Each morning and evening of the festival, a launch of the balloons will take place from a different location subject to weather conditions. Locations include The People’s Park, Piltown, Lismore Castle, Carriganore, Carroll’s Cross. In addition to the launches, the balloonists plan to provide a spectacular Night Glow sponsored by Re/Max where they inflate at night to the sound of music on the City’s Quayside, a sight to behold for all spectators. The night glow is weather dependant, it is currently planned for Tuesday evening at 9pm and will be confirmed in full on Facebook.com/IrishBallooningChampionship. During the festival the Balloon crews will also travel to local schools to demonstrate the balloons and talk to schoolchildren about the science of ballooning. The championships are kindly sponsored by Genzyme, Re/Max, Waterford City and County Council and Waterford Airport. Picture: Patrick Browne 13th Annual Imagine Arts Festival Programme Announced in Waterford Waterford is ‘awash’ with talent this Imagine Festival The Programme for 13th annual Imagine Arts Festival will be announced in Waterford City today, Thursday, September 25th at St. Patrick’s Gateway Centre. Waterford native and Editor of The Irish Times Kevin O’Sullivan officially launches the 2014 programme. Ireland’s oldest City will be awash with Irish and International talent for ten days from October 16th to October 26th as 62 different events both free and ticketed will be on offer at a variety of venues across Waterford City centre. According to the Festival Director, Ollie Breslin, the programme for this year’s Imagine festival will celebrate a wide variety of art forms including the spoken word, music, dance, comedy, visual art and drama. “We are delighted to host such a variety of artists at this year's festival, it is a very enticing programme and we expect that tickets will be hot property. Waterford has always been a great supporter of the Arts. Imagine Arts Festival is proud to play a role in continuing that tradition.” Some of the 2014 festival highlights include music from U.S. Folk singer Tim Eriksen; The Lost Brothers; American musician Lee Ranaldo best known as a co-founder of Sonic Youth, the world’s most famous brass band ‘The Black Dyke Band’, Dylan Tighe, Mick Flannery and a whole weekend of Trad with the John Dywer Trad Weekend. Author and playwright Michael Harding will also feature along with Author John MacKenna, Michael Smith, Colm Keegan and festival-man Mark Graham. History and Heritage is on offer with ‘Booze, Blaas n’Banter’ event which celebrates the City’s Quayside and maritime heritage, featuring a host of journalist, authors and musicians at a traditional ‘early house’ this event is one not to be missed. A variety of visual art will also be on offer with a Patrick Morrison Retrospective Exhibition featuring 20 of his most famous prints. In addition cartoonist and illustrator Gerald Scarfe will also host an exhibition along with artists Paul Bolger and Kate Gaudig. The premiere of a brand new documentary will also form part of the festival programme when the 'Ballybricken Documentary Film' by Mark Power will be screened on October 19th. This year’s Festival also features an events programme especially for children including a 'Parade of Light' and a variety of theatre and dance events for all tastes and ages.
