PRESS RELEASE 19TH OCTOBER 2022 Big Picture 2022 to feature stories of Ireland in photographs past and present Highlights from the photographic archives of the Irish Examiner will feature in a new festival scheduled for Kinsale next weekend (Sat 22nd/Sun 23rd October 2022). The event will be known as Big Picture 2022 that organisers hope will grow as a major attraction in the coming years. Times are 11 to 5 on Saturday and Sunday 22nd/23rd at the Temperance Hall in Kinsale. Dan Linehan will be speaking on the examiner pictures archive at noon each day. For further information about Big Picture 2022, please visit EventBrite Images to be included will be the visit of John F Kennedy to Ireland, the Buttevant Rail disaster, the funeral of Michael Collins and much more. The collection will be shown at midday on Saturday and Sunday at the Temperance Hall in Kinsale with free admission by EventBrite ticketing. The event is being organised by the Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) and the venue will also host the Press Photographer of the Year exhibition of more than 100 well known photographs that tell Ireland's stories of 2021. "A huge range of photographs, both past and present are certain to evoke memories and emotions from anyone coming to Big Picture 2022," said Dan Linehan, Chief Photographer at the Irish Examiner and PPAI committee member. "In the age of the smartphone, the skill of professional press photographers is still vital and can be seen in Kinsale at the weekend." The PPAI Covid Collection will also be displayed publicly for the first time as a reminder of some of the moving and impactful moments of the worst times of the pandemic in Ireland. Other speakers during the weekend include Frank Miller, former Irish Times photographer and pictures editor who will deliver a presentation in images of the journey from film to digital with some of his most memorable photographs with some technology insights. "Ireland's press photographers are the visual story-tellers of our island's life and times," commented David Branigan, PPAI President. "Showing our work as widely as possibly and especially amongst young women and men considering a career in media is a key objective of the PPAI." Well-known PPAI photographers will also be available to assist student photographers on both days who may wish to bring their portfolios to the event for feedback and career advice. All sessions are free but priority will be given to ticket-holders who book through the EventBrite site. Following the public events over the weekend, PPAI members from around Ireland will gather for the association's Autumn Conference over the following two days with professional and technical sessions including award-winning British photographer Edmond Terakopian.
