Cork City Football Club recognised by Mayor of the County of Cork
December 14th 2017
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Declan Hurley, hosted a civic reception to recognise the accomplishments of Cork City FC in 2017.
Cork City FC became Cork’s first league and cup double winners for more than 60 years and are current holders of six trophies, the SSE Airtricity League, the FAI Cup, the Women’s FAI Cup, U17 National League title, Munster Senior Cup and the President’s Cup.
In congratulating Cork City FC, Mayor Hurley paid particular tribute to the unwavering commitment of both Cork City as a team and their supporters, “This level of success has been achieved in less than 10 years since FORAS took over the club. Success lies with determination and commitment and Cork City FC are a wonderful example how people power can achieve real results.”
Cork City Football Club is entirely owned and operated by the Friends of the Rebel Army Society (FORAS) supporters trust. Since FORAS assumed control of the club in 2010, one of their key aims has been to establish such a home. Cork County Council, together with FORAS and the FAI are currently developing a Munster Centre of Excellence in Glanmire, Cork. The site will provide training facilities for Cork City FC as well as training, participation and playing facilities for players of all ages, coaches, referees and administrators. This is a centre that will benefit the wider community as well as grassroots of Irish Football.
Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey spoke of the importance of clubs such as Cork City FC to the younger community in Cork, “The clubs success with the Under 17s National league, first ever season of Under 15s and continued collaboration with the Cork Schoolboys league is amazing. As a Council we are always striving to support and encourage participation in any form of sport or activity. Sport is open to everyone and creates fantastic results no matter the level of participation. ”
Much of the success of Cork City FC must be attributed to their manager John Caulfield.
John is the recipient, and most rightly so, of numerous awards and accolades. Currently PFAI Manager of the Year for 2017, John leads the Cork charge on the list of nominees for the latest Soccer Writers Association of Ireland awards with Seán Maguire and Conor McCormack all making the shortlist of six for the 2017 Personality of the Year.
Mayor Hurley went on to say, “I would like to wish Cork City FC the very best for the 2018 season and in particular their foray into Champions League football this summer for the first time since 2005. Here’s to another record breaking season.”
