I was lucky enough to be invited onto a remote island in the Vanuatu archepelago whilst working as crew on a private yacht. They treated us like royal guests and but welcomed us like we were family.
These islanders rarely have protein in their diet (yam is the staple food) but on our arrival they organised the slaughter of a pig. The nominated women spent the whole day baking the pig in an earthed pit filled with hot stones. Never have I tasted something so good.
However, in anticipation of this feast the traditional customs were adhered to and the men of the island came out in traditional dress, weilding handmade instruments. Their dances were ornate and apt to the surrounding nature, with strong rhythms and bird like calls. Their songs were wonderfully harmonious and full of emotion.
There was something exceptionally special and rich to this small island community. Each beautiful face told a thousand stories and this a photo of one whom I thought to be quite striking.
As for me, the photographer... I am a 27 year old female from Dublin. I have spent the last 4 years or so living abroad in various places and have finally come home. I want to follow my new found love of photography and would absolutely be thrilled if my photo might be considered as a runner in this enviable competition.
